Mary

How can you resist falling in love with this gorgeous little girl? I sure couldn't! This is the story of how I met my best friend, while on the job at Michigan Road Animal Hospital.

Last July, a couple came into the hospital carrying a small brown puppy that had been hit by a car. They placed the 5 month old puppy in our care for x-rays and treatment, and never came back. Our phone calls went unanswered (the numbers they left had been disconnected), and the mail we sent was returned as undeliverable. In short, the severely injured, but adorable little brown puppy named "Mary" was abandoned.

Our doctors took little Mary under their wings and provided care for her. She had severe road rash, a fractured pelvis, a shattered left thigh, and multiple bruises. She had been lying in a ditch for some time after she was hit, so her open wounds had become infested with maggots. Multiple surgeries were required to repair her fractured pelvis and her badly broken leg. Pins and wires were placed in her leg, and Mary required round-the-clock care.

I instantly fell in love with Mary the first time she looked up at me. I was with her all the time, helping during her surgeries, keeping her wounds clean, making sure she was eating, and taking her outside during my lunch break. I live on campus at Butler University, where pets are not allowed. When Mary was ready to leave the hospital, I knew I had to find a way to keep her. I pleaded with my grandparents to let me keep her at their house. I promised to take care of her financially and to find a pet-sitter for Mary when they traveled. I was so excited when they agreed!

That was about nine months ago, and Mary is gradually healing. She visits me at college quite a bit, she thinks she's my study partner! Her pins were removed a couple months ago and radiographs were taken. Although her injuries have caused permanent damage, she has healed better than anyone thought possible. I love this little baby with all my heart! I can't wait until I have a place of my own so I can be with her every day. Everyone here at the hospital knows how precious Mary is and how lucky I am to have such a wonderful friend in my life!
