Because this involves pets that you folks see on a regular basis, I thought I'd share this one with you! At 4:54 yesterday morning, I was awakened by a weird *tap*tap*tap* coming from downstairs. The two dogs were already on "high alert" status, as it sounded like someone trying to break a window in my kitchen. I thought about calling the police, but instead I opted to open the baby gate at the top of the stairs, let the dogs downstairs, and follow them to see what was going on. I called "HELLO? as I opened the gate, but the tapping continued. The two greyhounds ran down the stairs to see where the noise was coming from. When I finally made my way downstairs, I saw the dogs and Casper the neurotic cat standing in the kitchen in front of the sliding glass door, very interested in something. I had gotten hungry the night before, and had opened a can of Campbell's Chunky Vegetable soup. I tossed the empty can in the trash, and Truffle (the pretty but senseless and fearless cat) had found it (she's learned how to open the pet-proof wastebasket) and dug it out. She had managed to get her head stuck in the can, and the tapping I heard was her banging the can against the sliding glass door! The dogs were looking at her in complete confusion, ears sticking straight up, and Casper had this "you dumb _ _ _" look on his face. It took about 10 minutes for me to carefully twist, jiggle, tug, and turn the can off her head. What a thing to wake up to! I'm soooo glad I didn't call the police. This would have been a hard thing to explain. As I was trying to extract her from the can, I was attempting to figure out just how I was going to explain this to all YOU if a vet trip was required. Truf is fine, and the offending can is now in the garage trash. *sigh* life here at "the zoo" can get interesting. |
